What Is Organic Coffee?

Sorry, I just have a quick question, Is it organic? That’s a question we are starting to hear a lot more in today’s day and age. It seems like a trend that’s developing among people and you may find yourself wondering: What is organic Coffee?  

Organic coffee is coffee produced without the aid of any artificial chemical substances, such as certain additives or some pesticides and herbicides. It’s coffee that is grown in its natural state. By making sure it is grown organically, coffee matures better without exposing it to unnecessary chemicals. Processed coffee can have a bland taste when it’s mass-produced. Organically farmed coffee does prove to be better when it comes to the overall taste.

Since its naturally grown, with no additives or pesticides, the coffee accents from each region can be accurately sampled. The beautiful journey the coffee bean took from the tree to the washing plant, to the roastery, to the grinder, to your cup – has more of an impact when it’s organic. Farming things organically does cost more as it requires a lot more manpower to nature and care for. So why go organic?

‘Organic food is the product of a farming system that avoids the use of man-made fertilisers, pesticides; growth regulators and livestock feed additives. Irradiation and the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) or products produced from or by GMOs are generally prohibited by organic legislation. 

Organic agriculture is a systems approach to production that is working towards environmentally, socially and economically sustainable production. Instead, the agricultural systems rely on crop rotation, animal and plant manures, some hand weeding and biological pest control’. –

When It comes to coffee, farmers can use all kinds of methods to mass-produce coffee beans in order to turn more profits. Organic coffee takes longer to produce and requires more maintenance. Since no pesticides are used, the coffee is susceptible to insect invasion. Organic fertiliser is used – like cow manure. This also requires more effort – driving up the cost of the coffee.

Organic farming is environmentally friendly. It incorporates old methods of farming and does not rely on any man-made fertilisers and pesticides. Is this of benefit when it comes to coffee? More than you think…

Organic Agriculture can strengthen the natural environment’s resistance to disease and soil erosion. Since the coffee trees take longer to grow, they are naturally stronger to diseases.

Farming coffee organically promotes the minimization of soil erosion and encourages the participation of a healthy ecosystem. Bird populations thrive in organically farmed areas – as there are no pesticides to harm them.

Since the cherries are grown naturally, the coffees’ taste will also improve. Coffee has its own unique taste from various regions it has grown in – the coffee from Africa will taste different from the coffee grown in Brazil.

Organic farming allows accents and aromatic properties to be distinct when drinking coffee. Watering down the taste with pesticides and man-made chemicals does give organic coffee the advantage. Perhaps that’s why it’s so expensive.

Is Organic Coffee for me?

Most, if not all, of us today are pro in going green and doing our bit for the environment. Consuming organic coffee is a tiny drop in the bigger picture. Yes, a drop does have a ripple effect – but is it necessary to consume such expensive coffee?

The environmental impact of regular grown coffee is minimal when comparing it to organic coffee. Coffee farming dates back to the early 1900s. Farming techniques have been passed on from generation to generation. The variables that assist in regular coffee growth would be fertilizer to increase crop growth and production, and pesticides to ward off unwanted diseases to spoil the coffee.

If you feel this bothers you, then organic coffee is the perfect solution for you. Regular coffee is still ethically farmed and produced. Coffee is one of the most ethical products that is farmed in today’s day and age. The bean to cup journey that coffee undergoes is magical. Many farmers do not want to spoil their unique taste and implement many ethical farming practices.
